2008 JGR II COLLOQUIUM ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION
The Friends of Casa Feliz and Rollins College co-sponsored this year's colloquium with noted preservationist Nore Winter whose keynote address was "Conservation Strategies: Four Steps to Preserving Neighborhood Character”. The event took place at 7:00 p.m. on April 17 at the Bush Auditorium at Rollins.
Winter, principal of Winter and Company in Boulder, Colorado, is the undisputed expert on neighborhood preservation in the U.S. With a career spanning 25 years, he has developed preservation plans for historic and conservation districts across the country, including Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Denver and Atlanta. He developed the design review system used in Carmel, California, the textbook community for effective planning and zoning. Closer to his home, he developed the design guidelines for Aspen, Breckenridge, Durango and Telluride. Also on Thursday evening, Casa Feliz chairman Jack Rogers presented the Friends of Casa Feliz Award for Outstanding Preservation to Rollins College, for their rehabilitation of the historic Pinehurst Cottage and restoration of Knowles Memorial Chapel.
This year’s Colloquium added a second day of activities scheduled for Friday. The day kicked off at 10 a.m. with a panel discussion on the “Best Practices in Historic Preservation.” Moderated by Thaddeus Seymour, President Emeritus of Rollins, the discussion focused on what communities around the country have done to protect their historic architectural resources. Joining Nore Winter on the panel was Kathleen Crowther, Executive Director of the Cleveland (Ohio) Restoration Society, and the Honorable Don Slesnick, four-term Mayor of Coral Gables, Florida and founding chairman of the Florida Historic Preservation Advisory Council. Following the panel, lunch was served at Casa Feliz, followed by a trolley tour of four historic properties in Winter Park, including Pinehurst Cottage and Knowles Chapel. Registration for the Thursday evening program was free of charge and open to the public. Admission for Friday’s program was $30; space was limited on Friday to 60 participants. Attendees on Friday were eligible for APA continuing education credits.
